How to set Ubuntu to display out through S-Video and VGA

Asked by Michael Hazell

Can someone please tell how me how to enable display output to a VGA or S-Video port?

My laptop is the Toshiba M55-S139. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

I don't know if there is a proprietary driver for my ATI card, as Ubuntu doesn't say anything about it. Only restricted driver I could get is for my "Software Modem". My laptop has a phone jack, so it is a little dated hardware. RAM has been upgraded with 2 1 gig chips.

In Windows XP, all I had to do to trigger the external display output is press Fn + F5.

I am willing to provide any more info if it is needed.

I am a new Ubuntu user, but am learning real fast how to work it. Am a Windows Power User/Pro.

Precise IS Ubuntu. It's the codename for version 12.04 which is due for release in April.

Oh, you didn't put the full code name, then I would have understood it. No, I have not. Unity will not load on 11.10. I would get to the try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu screen, and then I would click try. then it would flash some text, which I was ok with as I know what it meant, and then it changed to the background picture, and that was it. Unity did not pop up at all. I tried 3 times with no success.

Please keep the question open. I need someone to answer it so I can output my display to another device.

If you have the video card "ATI MOBILITY RADEON X200M", try doing things from the bug #573550

Can you help with this problem?
