Can't install video card driver

Asked by James Bell

I'm new to Ubuntu (and Linux). Here's my specs:

Sony Vaio PCV RS530G
160 GB hard drive (37 GB partition for Ubuntu)
Two Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHz Processors
ATI Radeon 9200 Graphics Card

In "System Info" under Graphics, it says: Driver: Unknown. Experience: Standard.
I've tried the "Additional Drivers" option, but it doesn't show up with any, even after I downloaded the proprietary driver (Catalyst) from the AMD website, and it didn't show up in Additional Drivers. I tried executing it as a program, and it still didn't change anything. I would prefer not to use Xorg, but if that's my only option I will. How do I install a driver? Is there a Device Manager on Ubuntu like on Windows?

The 9200 is no longer supported by the catalyst driver as far as I am aware, AMD consider it old, you will be supported by the opensource driver

Can you help with this problem?
