No display after fresh install ASUS laptop K53A

Asked by Ossiyama

After installing Ubuntu 11.10 on my ASUS K53A laptop I lose my display right at the screen where Ubuntu's initial OS loading screen would normally show with the loading bullets under the Ubuntu logo. How do I correct this. My computer is running an AMD A6-3400 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The graphics are switchable within windows but I don't know that that necessarily matters.

Display adapters: AMD 6600M and 6700M Series
                                    AMD Radeon HD 6520G

This is how they are listed in my device manager. I am wondering if I will have to load proprietary drivers before running Ubuntu or if that is even possible. Keep in mind I am new to this OS so if you respond to this please don't skip any steps. Thanks. Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

Yes. My windows 7 is 64 bit so I used the 64 bit ubuntu installer.

Try the boot option:

nomodeset

It can help, you can then install the proprietary driver and be ok.

Is that just replace the splash command in the boot options? I'll give it a shot after work today let you know how it goes. How do I install proprietary drivers on ubuntu?

yes next to:

quiet splash

Which are the default options.

Okay that got me a little further but now it just goes to an ms-dos like loading screen where it gets to "*checking battery state..." and then just sits there. Am I on the right track? What next?

Can you help with this problem?
