Black Screen 11.10 64 Bit -- Running an ADM Radeon (TM) HD 6520G

Asked by Charles Castle

I am new to ubuntu.

I had tried to install 11.10, but this was unsuccessful as it only went to a black screen and then would stop.

So I installed 10.04, but this version would not recognize my WiFi, so I installed 10.10, and again the same problem.

I finally was able to install 10.04, and the WiFi finally worked.

So, I decided to upgrade to 11.10 and everything went smoothly until it rebooted to finish the installation.

Now, when I select to run Unbutu 11.10 from the boot menu (I am also running windows 7, I get a purple screen for about 10 seconds, then a dark screen that is still lit with a flashing cursor, then a black screen with no lighting at all.

Afterwards, the lights for the computer activity stop completely.

I am figuring this is a display adapter issue, but I am not sure since the activity on the computer stops as well.

I have NO idea what to do now, so can someone please help me?

 I have a Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7340 17.3" Laptop, with:
   AMD Quad-Core A6-3400M Accelerated Processor
    6GB installed memory
    640GB hard drive
    Blu-Ray Disc® (BD-ROM) and DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash®
    17.3" diagonal widescreen TruBrite® TFT display at 1600 x 900 native resolution (HD+)

I found out that the problem with 11.10 is that the kernel 3.0 does not work with ADM Radeon processors. However, the kernel version 3.2 does. I found a link to the 12.4 edition of ubuntu, and it installed perfectly! I experienced no problems whatsoever with my system (other than I actually have a blueray player, but it seems linux does not have apps for blueray -- the dvd/cd reader & writer work perfectly fine, though). So, anyone with ADM Radeon, install 12.4 and bypass 11.10 to avoid black screen issues.
