No Backlight on Sony VGN A217S

Asked by Derek Giles

Hi
Since upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 i cannot adjust the brightness on my Laptop. When i go to System Settings > Screen there is no sliding l bar to adjust. It's an old girl and the cd drive is broken and it won't do a reinstall via usb. it has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card. If it can't be got to work in 11.10 can i downgrade to 11.04 via the Terminal

The only way to downgrade is to reinstall Natty, is the screen ok in the liveCD of Oneiric?
