Ubuntu 11.10 runs slow op P4

Asked by Patje

Hello there,

I have a P4 2,4 GHz HP Compaq with 1Gb mem and a ATI graphic card. I tried to install the new ubuntu on it, but it so slow even in the 2D unity mode.
At this moment I switched to debian, but this is a gnome 2.3 and this runs great.
Previous versions of ubuntu have always worked on my system. Has any one an idea why the new version is so slow and how I can change it so that I can switch back to ubuntu.

Thx

P4 at 2.4 GHZ can handle ubuntu 11.10 with ease. the problem may be with your ATI graphic card, for which the proper driver is required to run the unity 3d. check the availability of proprietary drivers at the ATI web site or try from the " additional drivers" option in system settings.

It's an ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] (rev 01) graphic card. I looked in on it and it seems I need to use the xorg-edgers ppa. I will try this.

But at my home pc (a quad core with nvidia card, ubuntu detected the card and installed the hardware) I have the same problem. Unity was very slow. I use there a dual screen, in v11.04 it worked fine.
I have installed gnome-shell and this works fine.

Can you help with this problem?
