What windows does or doesn't do is of no value, it is a different OS with completely different support.

When you boot, do you simply get a black screen after the boot screen? It is unclear in your question

Thanks

I boot up the computer . It asks which os i would like to use ubuntu or windows xp . Then i click on ubuntu and it offers a screen it then says completing ubuntu installation and says for more boot options press esc. then the screen goes black and the green light is on from the monitor meaning that there is a signal running through. then it just sits there and nothing

Hi,

It seems you have installed Ubuntu from within Windows.

Did you tried Ubuntu before starting to install it on your computer ?
If yes, did everything worked well with Ubuntu ? i.e. you got to the Ubuntu Desktop and work with it ?

If you didn't tried Ubuntu before installing, I suggest then that you do it by burning the iso file you have downloaded (from Windows) after checking its MD5 sum and booting your computer with that CD. Alternatively, if you have one spare 1 GB USB drive, you could use Unetbootin to make a bootable Ubuntu install USB disk (which will saves you the cost of one CD).

It is better to always test any Ubuntu version with your computer environment before installing/upgrading it.

Hope that helps.
