I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu alltogether, without any luck in getting the acceleration to work satisfactory.

Uninstalled the driver which was provided from the Ubuntu repositories and installed the 11.6-driver from AMD.

After a clean install of Ubuntu, the problem seems to be to a much lesser extent than before.
