After upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 - Screen flickering after login

Asked by pptpb

This morning I received Ubuntu Natty upgrade alert, so I used the update program to update from 10.10 to 11.04.

After successfully upgrage and reboot, my screen goes on flickering after login to unity every 15-30 seconds.
I try to change my desktop environment from Unity to Ubuntu Classic (that is, Gnmoe), but the problem still exists.

Don't know how to resolve it, or should I roll back to 10.10 ?
Thanks for help!

Go to System Settings > Hardware > Additional Drivers (or, if you're in a Classic session, it's System > Administration > Additional Drivers) and see if there are any alternative video drivers available for you to try. If so, I recommend trying that, as it could fix this problem. You'll need to reboot after enabling such drivers, to know whether or not they worked.

If that worked, then please mark this question as Solved (you can do that at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+question/154688) and, (only) if you like, comment with details (as this may be useful to others). If not, then please post a reply with the following information:

(1) What is the make and model of your computer?

(2) What video card do you have (specific make and model)?

(3) Whether or not you are able to provide that information, please (also) open a Terminal window (Applications > Accessories > Terminal or Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command:

sudo lshw -c video

To run a command paste (or carefully type) it in and press enter. You may be prompted for your password. As you enter it, you won't see any placeholder characters (like *). That's OK--just type it in and press enter.

Then, after that command completes, select all the text from the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here.

Thanks for guidelines.

There is no any other additional drivers in the field.

(1) I installed Ubuntu on my desktop, it's an assembled computer with motherboard ASUS M2A-VM ( http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2AVM/ )

(2) No additional video card.

(3) `sudo lshw -c video` result:

If there is any other info you need to know, please tell me. Thanks again! :-)

I am facing the very similar problem. I installed ubuntu 11.04 and after rebooting the computer my screen flickers and i can't work in it. I have Intel 865G motherboard with inbuilt graphics card. I cant find any Additional drivers from system > Administration > Additional Drivers). Right now i'm logged in as ubuntu(no effects) and flickering is minimal in this mode.

The result of 'sudo lshw -c video':

consfire@consfire-desktop:~$ sudo lshw -c video
[sudo] password for consfire:
  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
       product: 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 02
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
       configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
       resources: irq:16 memory:f0000000-f7ffffff memory:ffa80000-ffafffff ioport:ec00(size=8)
consfire@consfire-desktop:~$

I hope you will find some solution for me as i'm kind of new in linux-ubuntu platform and can't figure it out on my own.

actually i just find out that, this flickering problem may be occurring because Unity(desktop platform in ubuntu 11.04) doesn't support your graphics hardware.

this might be useful as it somehow worked for me.

Without knowing your graphics hardware I suspect you cannot run Unity, when you log into GNOME(ubuntu classic or ubuntu no effect) open a terminal and type the following;

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

It will let you know if your hardware supports Unity, if you get a NO response at the end you can always install Unity2D by typing the following in a terminal;

sudo apt-get install unity-2d-default-settings

Or if you are in the GNOME desktop select Applications -> Ubuntu Software Centre
then search for and install Unity2D.

You can then log out and Select Unity 2D (or normal ubuntu mode afterwards because i saw similar performance) at the log in screen.....

personally i'm not still too happy with ubuntu 11.04 performance anyway....

I had same problem just few minutes ago with ati HD 3600 on Ubuntu 11.04 but i resolved it by going in recovery mode, settings, additional drivers and system automaticly told me that graphics driver is not activated, so i clicked on "activate" and it downloaded new drivers and restarted system. Now everything's working perfectly.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!
