Extreme Lag in Games
I just downloaded Ubuntu. I have an ASUS G73 Laptop (I am sure I will be asked so I will list now: I have an: intel core i7, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics card). On Windows I could run most any game at the highest graphics settings with anti-aliasing as high as possible with no real lag to speak of. However, in Ubuntu, I downloaded Armagetron and Assault Cube, and both of them are ultra laggy with really low frame rates. I was told by a friend it might be as a result of my swap file being too small, so I repartitioned it to 10gb. No change whatsoever. I don't really know what else to try. Any suggestions would be welcomed as I otherwise love Ubuntu.

Thats because ATi and other manufacturers give a lot more lobe to Windows. The driver architecture is COMPLETELY different so different things will run different in both OSes. ATi do support Linux but they have only recently started. Companies like Nvidia and Intel have been doing it for years.
Can you give the output of:
sudo lshw -C display; uname -a; dpkg -l | grep -i ati

Thanks for the information. Is there anything I can really do other than only use Windows, because I don't really want to buy a new graphics card...
An update that fits what you said: I tried to change the effects level on the desktop and it said my graphics card wasn't good enough.

Ok you are inly using the open driver. For decent 3d performance you need to closed source driver. In System -> Admin you will be able to enable the driver and get a LOT better 3D performance. This is te same in Windows. If you do not install drivers, the drivers available to the OS are used and performance sucks.
