How to install ATI graphics driver under Natty 11.04

Asked by Hee-Young Shin

Hi,

I am new to Ubuntu.
I recently upgraded Ubuntu 11.4 beta 1 from 10.10 and found that the ATI graphics driver was not installed properly.
(The hardware is ATI Radeon X 1250 under Toshiba laptop L300 series.)

Whenever I try to run the Catalyst Control Center Linux edition, the following message appears:
"No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not function properly."

My question is (1) will Natty 11.04 stable version resolve this problem associated with ATI Atheros chipset? or do I need to manually installed the propriety graphics driver provided by the ATI technologies?

When I tried to look at the Wiki Ubuntu manual online, I found that there are somewhat confusing and conflicting instructions for installing the ATI propriety graphic drivers manually. So the second question is (2) can we expect that there will be an updated clear manual for installing the driver under Ubuntu 11.4 stable version?

Thanks.

Unless you have a specific reason to use the catalyst driver, the open source driver that comes with Ubuntu by default is quite good for 3D and actually better for 2D and video.
You don't need to install catalyst, but if you have it already installed then you might have to remove it manually since it may interfere with the open source driver.

In order to evaluate the open driver, boot the live CD image and see how it behaves.

I installed the catalyst driver using the software updater because I wasn't sure whether the system upgrade to 11.04 beta successfully installed the relevant open driver. I hope there would be no problem associated with the ATI driver in the upcoming stable version of Ubuntu.
Thank you.
