Unity dock does not appear in 11.04 ATI Radeon

Asked by Lotus Schwartz III

I just installed 11.04 Beta on my Toshiba Laptop and the Unity Dock does not appear. I believe the issue is due to my video card. ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 or 9100 not exactily sure. I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now and love it, but I am no means an expert and will require step by step instructions on a video card settings fix. Thank you BTW, I know a lot of reviews have been negative about this release, but I love it and think this makes Ubuntu much more intiutive and I am now installing it on families computers instead of windows.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a

Can you also run:

ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati

and log a bug. Natty is NOT stable and NOT ready. Natty is full of bugs so you will get issues, even a little after release date. If you need a stable OS then use Maverick. If you want a half-ready OS full of feature holes and bugs ad want to log bugs to get Natty ready for release then by all means, use Natty.

In case this turns out actually not to be due to your video drivers, I suggest that after reporting the bug, you mark it as also affecting unity in Ubuntu (rather than just xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu). You can do this with the "Also affects distribution" link on the bug page. While some bugs are really in more than one package, most likely one of these packages will be wrong...but its status will get marked Invalid in the wrong package once enough information is available to know, and in the mean time you increase the chance and speed of your bug being marked a duplicate if it is, and of other bugs being marked a duplicate of yours if they are.

Also, before reporting any bugs, I highly recommend reading this carefully:

Rather old, maybe that's why.
Did you get any fallback message regarding hardware? Bug #712091
Are you able to choose between sessions on login?
Ubuntu Desktop = Unity
Classic Desktop = Gnome2 (more or less)
