Resolution/ATI drivers

Asked by Real smith

Alright so I just got Ubuntu today, I have a Radeon 6870. I noticed that the max resolution for Ubuntu is 1600x1200. My monitor runs at a native resolution of 1920x1080, I downloaded the recomended FGLRX driver but it appears not to be working. When I type in fglrxinfo I get nothing. I then downloaded ATI Catalyst Control Center for linux (32 bit), after installing it and restarting Ubuntu crashed. I am now in recovery mode and cant find a way to uninstall it. I dont really care about the drivers as much as getting my resolution to 1920x1080.

Try failsafe mode.
or
drop to root shell.
Type:
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
aticonfig --initial

Reboot.

## It needs the same procedure after kernel upgrades.

There is also faq and wiki, maybe read this before installing something.

If it still doesn't work get modeline with 'xrandr' and 'cvt' and put in screen section of xorg.conf.

Recommended and provided is a difference. Recommended are open source drivers.
