White Screen on Log-In after Software Updates

Asked by taniste

Ubuntu 8.04, Video Car: ATI Technologies RV630 [Radeon HD 2600XT]

Performed routine SW upgrade with Update Manager, without paying much attention to details.

After rebooting get a white screen after log-in. The PC is alive, I can move the mouse, I can see applications running with Alt-Tab, can start new ones by clicking on icons on tool-bar but cannot do anything useful.

Have logged in in GNOME Failsafe Mode (very slow, with limited capabilities).

Would appreciate any advice.

Ubuntu 8.04 isn't more supported please update your release to Ubuntu 10.04...
using menu System→Administration→Update-manager

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10 soon after buying this PC. Many applications (eg lindvd) did not work with version 10 so I re-installed 8.04.

I would appreciate suggestions on how to restore GNOME usability without an OS upgrade. Probably I just need to revert some library to an older version.

Many thanks.

It's got very little support in it on the desktop. I would update to Lucid at least (even Karmic is dying soon). If you boot an older kernel, does it work ok?

I am running kernel 2.6.24-29-generic and had no problems until this morning.

When I upgraded to Ubuntu 10 most importantly the video accelerator did not work and everything was slow and wavy (as it is now in the fail-safe mode).

I understand Lucid (Lynx) is 10.04. What is Karmic?

Karmic is ubuntu version 9.10 and it's support dies when Hardy does on the desktop next year,

This chart shows when they are released and when they die:

Hardy willcontinue to be supported after April but only on the server.

I solved the problem by installing the video card driver from the manufacturer's website.

Thanks everyone for prompt response.
