No signal on external monitor but xrandr reports it is on

Asked by Martin

Binary package hint: xorg

I am running Xubuntu 10.10 (also tried with Ubutnu 10.10). I can't make any external monitor working. Only when I switch to console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), the external monitor nicely mirrors my laptop screen. But when I return back (Alt+F7) the external monitor looses the signal again. I tried many options with xrandr command, trying to set lower resolutions, switch off primary display..., but without any success. xrandr even reports that the monitor is on and uses correct resolution (I see * next to it). The same problem I had with previous Ubuntu release(s).

My configuration is:
Thinkpad Lenovo Z60m
ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600]

I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Xubuntu does not use the gnome GUI to automate using two monitors. Instead, you must create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to enable this. Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Multihead to assist with this.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Martin for more information if necessary.
