Cannot see startup boot messages

Asked by felch

I cannot see any startup messages during boot processes. Everything seems to be compressed into pixel paste in the top centimeter of the screen. Similarly, when I have a Gnome freeze and manage to drop out to a basic shell, everything is also mashed into paste at the top of the screen. I know it is a not dead shell, because if I type or give basic commands, there is activity shown with pixels moving and changing colour.

It's 10.04, 2.6.32-26-generic-pae, updated to current available patches as per update manager. This has been a problem from the very start however.

Its a Dell Studio 15 -

Use this until the embedded video:
http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/lucidubuntu-10-04-high-resolution-plymouth-virtual-terminal-for-atinvidia-cards-with-proprietaryrestricted-driver/

It will force the boot to use framebuffer driver, the radeon / frglrx / whatever driver will load as normal when the desktop loads

just an added note - you then have to go back and edit grub to remove "quiet" and "splash".
