stuck on tty1 in Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Jacob Kruse

I have just switched from edubuntu to the regular desktop version 64 bit 10.10 version. I installed the OS and then installed all my updates and configured everything back to the way I had it in edubuntu and also activated my ATI driver. I then rebooted and I became stuck in tty1 and I have read everything through the forums about other people having the same problem and I find nothing that works for me. when i looked at my /var/log/Xorg.0.log this is what I got:

In root recovery mode:

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_old

Then reboot

Do you get a desktop?

Well I just put in the Live CD and I just updated everything besides my driver to ATI graphics card and it booted perfectly... I just do not know how to get the driver for my card to work. Is there something that I can do to make the ATI work to its fullest potential?

Sure but you'll need a desktop first dude. If you don't have xorg.conf then try removing the xserver-xorg-video-radeon package too, this should switch you to the ati driver, if thats no good remove xserver-xorg-video-ati and you will use vesa which WILL work.
