Drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon X600

Asked by Hugh Smythe

I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm running version 10.10 on my laptop. As far as I'm aware, I'm using the open source drivers to enable the graphics card - ATI Mobility Radeon X600. I don't play online games but do use GIMP to manipulate photos so I want to get the best screen image possible. I would also like to be able to adjust the contrast and colour balance of the screen, as well as the brightness.

My questions are:

1. How do I tell if my computer is running the open source driver?
2. Is there an alternative driver that's not too complicated to install and would make the ATI Mobility Radeon X600 work better?
3. Would this driver allow me to adjust contrast/colour balance?

Thanks in advance,

Hugh

1. There's no other driver (other than generic vesa) that will work for your card with Maverick. To verify, look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and you'll see a bunch of lines that start with RADEON
2. For mode-setting and 2D, no. For 3D, there are now two drivers for R300-R500 cards - classic mesa and gallium3d. The classic driver is the default, and you can try the gallium3d version here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
3. Try gddccontrol package.
