[ATI] Blank Screen After Booting With Kernel 2.6.35-22-generic In Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Marcus Hayhurst

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (no graphics drivers installed) on an Asus F3Ka laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphics card and then upgraded to 10.10 through Update Manager. Everything worked fine in 10.04 before I formatted but now whenever I boot with kernel 2.6.35-22-generic under 10.10 I get a blank screen (the screen appears to shutoff) this even happens using Recovery Mode. If however I boot with kernel 2.6.32-25-generic everything boots up as normal. If I highlight kernel 2.6.35-22-generic under the GRUB menu, press "e", delete "quiet splash" and enter: "radeon.modeset=0" then everything appears to boot but it always boots to the command line. I also tried "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop" under kernel 2.6.35-22-generic's command line and that did not work either. This appears to be a compatibility issue between the graphic's card and new kernel, is there a fix for this. Thank you

As you already have a workaround (booting with previous kernel), I propose you to raise a bug.
The fix will probably delivered with next kernel.
By removing with Synaptic the kernel package, you remove it from Grub2 menu, and automatically boot on working kernel.
