Asked by Deltik

Computer Model: Apple iMac 27" 11,3
Operating System: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
Related Hardware Information: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series Graphics Card
Related Modifications to Default Install: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver

What Happens:
Playing a video using Totem Movie Player (totem) and Dragon Player (dragonplayer) shows a black frame throughout the entire video for all videos. WinFF (winff) is unable to convert video, but it can convert audio. Audio works normally for the current configuration on the machine. Videos show correctly with Avidemux (avidemux) and LiVES (lives). Adobe Flash (flashplugin-installer) also displays correctly.

What Should Happen:
Videos should display with sound for all video players.

Deltik,

I'm not really sure this is going to work, it's typically used to fix "nvidia" card's output - but perhaps it will solve your problem as well?

In a terminal (or Alt+F2) type "gstreamer-properties" then click the Video tab - for Default Output try using "X Windows System (No Xv)" - obviously if this doesn't work try the other option.

Best of luck,
George
