KMS not working for ATI Sapphire HD 2400 Pro AGP 8X

I have a problem when trying to boot a live CD on my desktop with ATI Sapphire HD 2400 Pro AGP 8X video card:

I get a black screen and the system seems to believe everything is working well... (the welcome sound plays, ctrl-alt-F1 works, the mouse moves around and if you click it do things, also if you don't see them...)

The only way to boot is by setting up the safe video mode, disabling thus KMS

I had the same problem with Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse, it seems that something goes wrong with recent kernels and my video card.

Do you know a way to work around this problem and have some more feature using radeon or something else?

Note: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on which there is a bug when building fglrx, so I would need some help in the meantime the problem is fixed.
