Ubuntu 10.04 runs fine in low graphics mode and is extremly slow in normal mode.

Asked by Henk Ronnoc

I am running ubuntu 10.04 in a Dell dimension 8100 Pentium 4 1.5 GHz with 512 MB of rimm ram (in other words experimental ram that never took off and is around 200$ new. The only reason I have it is because it was what came with the machine and it will not take normal ram.) My problem is about a week after installing ubuntu, it started running slow and would eventually freeze and kill whatever windows were open. After about 5 minutes it would redisplay the desktop but not the windows that were open. I have tried to run the repair option and everything else. The only way it seems to run fine is in low graphics mode. The shocking thing is that low graphics mode and my normal settings are not that different. Please help.

You have told us a lot except the one piece of information. YOUR VIDEO CHIP. The CPU and RAM are of no interest to us. We need to drive your video chip and you haven't told us that.

Can you please give the output of:

sudo lshw -C display

Thanks

The driver used is the one for your card. ATi don't support your chip so the open driver is used by the 9800. You may need to form an xor.conf to get better performance. Websearch to find sample files.

Thanks. This sort of solved my problem so that now the computer is not freezing but it takes a long time to load applications and it takes a bit of time for it to register that the mouse has moved. Any suggestions?

Can you help with this problem?
