Yes this is a bug in the radeon driver. I filed a bug report upstream about a month ago. But no action taken so far, seems the devs are too busy with kms these days.
Anyway for me this bug only appears if I connect my monitor to the DVI-1output port, DVI-0 works fine. It would be nice if the LiveCD had some sort of option to select the VESA driver during boot as the Evergreen code in radeon is rather new and still contains some bugs as people now find out.
