It looks this issue doesn't exist on my RV350 (Radeon 9600). I've upgraded Kubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 (x86) few days ago and since then I've been running my computer for few hours a day with KDE desktop effects just fine. I tried some OpenGL games and apps running for few hours, too. Since then I haven't noticed any problems with "radeon" driver.
Might it be an issue for R4xx and R5xx cards?
