To put it together:
1. I saw the same freezing issue also on the stable OpenSuse 11.1 with KDE 4.2 installed separately (as 11.1 has only 4.1) from the development (factory) branch.
2. So far, it happens on ATI, Intel and nVidia video hardware.
3. Crashes are unpredictable. Differences may be extreme. One day everything was great, another day - it froze almost immediately after launch.
4. It takes place on both: KDE 4.2.1 and KDE 4.2.2.
5. Desktop effects are a great feature.
