I've tested kwin now. The desktop effects use opengl (at least in my case) and I get the same freezing as described here and in Bug # 350933. I'm still not sure if this problem is kwin specific or opengl specific.

Interestingly, the gnome desktop effects work fine. What renderer is used by gnome?

I'm pretty convinced now that Bug # 350933 and this one result from the same error. Do you think it should be marked as a duplicate?
