My system is updated to todays state (ie 1/Sept). I still have this problem. By the way this means I have to do a hard restart, I cant get out of it with ctrl-alt-backspace.
I followed the advice from Timo Aaltonen above:
1. Re-enable AGPFASTREWRITE and restart X.
Result: black screen
Reboot machine into recoverz mode
2. Disable loading of DRI module and start X
Result: black screen
Reboot machine into recoverz mode
3. Rename xorg.conf as xorg.bak and start X
Result: X starts successfullz but Gnome gives an error message on trzing to set some properties.
Of course now mz German kezboard is a US kezboard and mz lefthanded mouse is a righthanded mouse ...
4. I don|t know what to do about MonitorLayout, maybe you can give some more instructions here
