The proprietary video drivers will work fine. They have issues with 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx GPUs, which yours isn't.

The normal one.. as @actionparsnip said , only AMD graphics 2xxx-4xxx series have problems with the Ubuntu 12.10. (Xorg 1.13)

Thanks

I found some problems after installing this driver:
1. I'm using cinnamon, and when ever taskbar show/hide screen flickers, or sometimes goes weirdly colorfull.
2. When I open a game (i tried trigger and assault cube), screen goes blank and system needs a reboot.
3. After I reboot, "Home", "Computer", "Networks" icons which were formerly disabled from showing in destops are again visible (but hides automatically by itself in the second reboot)

And the great thing is my laptop heat is reduced by 55C from 78C after installing catalyst. I've removed catalyst because of all those problems, and my laptop has returned as a full fledged "Heat generator".. I sometimes think of toasting some bread on it.. I hav noticed, that when i play music only, the temparature is around 80C. The least temparature is 65C when i keep it idle for some minutes.

Also, i wonder if there is any direct link between catalyst and conky, for it partially stopped after removing catalyst. please see: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qyg0uht8qbbbeoa/Screenshot%20from%202013-02-03%2013%3A04%3A33.png

NB: My main intention towards fglrx was to reduce laptop heat.

This is what lshw shows about my GC:
*-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI

       resources: irq:48 memory:c0000000-cfffffff memory:fbe20000-fbe3ffff ioport:e000(size=256) memory:fbe00000-fbe1ffff

My system is Dell inspiron N5010 (3GB ram, intel i3).

how can i reduce the heat?

This is the only way to install Catalyst in 12.10 with the card you have (series : 2xxx-4xxx).

Sorry.

Sure ... I think I'm blind.. for time to time.. haha..

Remove the PPA .. If you installed this ppa.. execute the commands below..

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

sudo ppa-purge ppa:makson96/fglrx

sudo apt-get update..

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and install the drivers that Ubuntu provides... (fglrx)

sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle

sudo amdconfig --initial -f

and reboot your system.

Thanks

Then you can try the newer driver fglrx-updates .. then I have no other answer.. sorry.

First remove the fglrx

sudo apt-get purge fglrx* fglrx-amdcccle*

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then install

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates

sudo amdconfig --initial -f

and reboot to see ...

Thank you.
