updated to 12.10 cant log in no icons

Asked by Peter Jordan

After updating to 12.10 system went to reboot to complete and hung on reboot. Applied hard reset and system starts to login screen. Shows top right icons on login screen ie keybord wireless icon etc. Now have two guest users instead of original one. As soon as I enter password screen goes to wallpaper image with no icons at all. My only access at the moment is via right click on desktop to get to all sttings these function but not correctly. System thinks my screen is a laptop, its not its a pc desktop wont allow me to change it. There are no icons to exit settings screens other than hard reset. Can get a terminal up but that is all. Any rightclick on desktop seems to still work but not fully.
How can I get my desktop programme icons back to allow access to system.

Did you try and enable the proprietary driver.

Use the additional drivers app in dash, or run:

gksudo jockey-gtk

Hi Adrew, That is the point of my question. I cannot get to any desktop icons to do that. There are no icons on the desktop for me to access the dash.
I will try "gksudo jockey-gtk" from a terminal.
but I dont think this is a driver issue. We are getting video output to the screen as its showing my wallpaper image.
will advise the outcome shortly

Hi Andrew,
Opened terminal entered gksudo jockey-gtk and hit enter response was this command lets you alter the configuration of your system. then asked for my password which I entered. Nothing happened. Did a hard reset again but nothing has changed.
It appears everything is there because I can get into settings and most of it is working. It is the nautilus shell (I think thats what you call it) that is not working. Still no programme icons.

it is the unity interface that has not loaded on reboot following the update how do I force this part of the system to load.
