Can you open your Terminal and try the command below:

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true

HTH.

Hi, I'm having the exact same problem on my laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad Y530) The mouse works on the login screen, but stops working after I login. On the login screen the mouse doesn't work well. It's very choppy and unresponsive. I tried that command you suggest above ("gconftool-t ...") but that has no effect.

It was working fine for years now, I've been using Ubuntu on this laptop since 8.04 at least with no issues. About two days ago the mouse started acting very choppy and unresponsive. Today I installed a synaptic/X.org update and the mouse stopped working entirely. On bootup, I get a message like this (I didn't copy it verbatim, sorry): "Your touchpad claims to have extended capabilities, but I can't read them". I never used to get that message before.

I can get around on my keyboard enough to stay productive, but I would really like to get this mouse thing sorted out asap. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
