I upgraded GSynaptics to GPointingDeviceSettings and still the same results. Touchpad does not respond.

Try the boot options

i8024.reset
and/or
i8024.nomux=1
and/or
irqpoll

Let me show my Ubuntu novice ignorance. what do you mean by boot options. I can run command from terminal but do not have a clue as to how to add a boot option. Point me in the right direction,. Thanks

I tried all the combinations and non of them worked. Nine reboots later the touchpad is still not working. I like Ubuntu but these are the kind of issues that keep me from recommending it an everyday computer user. I don't give up easy if anyone has any more suggestions i am willing to give it a try.

True but most times touchpads work. Only a few weird ones don't work so its absolutely fine, you just have some oddball hardware and you need a boot option to make it nice, that's all it is.

Can you reboot and run:

dmesg > ~/out123.txt; gedit ~/out123.txt; rm ~/out123.txt

I still haven't given up on this one. Found and article that suggested

echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe

problem is I get permission denied even with sudo or su as suggested. It worked for others that own the same model computer on Karmic Koala (9.10 Beta) . Is there an equivalent command for lucid?

the sudo doesn't traverse the > character so I recommend you use (all files in /etc/modprobe.d must weirdly end in .conf (It's weird as Linux doesn't make use of file extensions))

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf

paste in:

options psmouse proto=exps

Press CTRL+X
Press Y
Press ENTER

File is now created. Reboot to test.
