Mouse cursor starts whatever it is pointing at.

Asked by David Hogan

I'm running 12.04. Whatever my mouse cursor points at, it starts that item after a few seconds without me touching the mouse. So if I put the mouse cursor out of the way to read something, the pointer changes color to orange and that item starts. It's driving me mad. Any ideas, please?

I need to make my question clearer. "So if I put the mouse cursor out of the way so that I can read something, the pointer changes color to orange and whatever item it happens to be pointing at will start up". I hope that makes more sense now.

I should have added that my mouse is working OK with Windows.

I have now done a virus scan with ClanTk which showed that no threats were found. Should I now re-install Ubuntu? I can't go on with this much longer.

I have now tried a mouse from a friend, and it acts just the same. No problem on Windows but acting up badly in ubuntu. I am now considering seriously re-installing. What's the best way to do this? Any ideas please?

I switched my computer on this morning and there it was, GONE!!! I had a disc deleting program ready (daricks deban) to install and the installation CD for Ubuntu 12.04 waiting to be dealt with today. I'm very pleased that I will not need them now. (Not today anyway).
