cursor/mouse/touchpad disabled after ubuntu 11.10 install

Asked by Fred Page

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Compaq-mini laptop. Everything seemed to be working fine until I rebooted after the huge batch of software updates. Then, after logging on again, the cursor/mouse/touchpad is completely unresponsive. All I can do is log on and off. I'm brand new to Ubuntu or just about any open source software for that matter.

I'm trying stuff as I'm typing, but now the pointer disappeared, before it was just sitting in the middle. None of the settings I can get to do anything. Found the terminal though, but don't know how to use it.

If you log in to the Unity2D session, is it ok?

No, logging on to 2D doesn't change anything.

Well at least adding a USB mouse works.

But I'd like to use the touchpad...

If installing a "vanilla" kernel as the linked bug report suggests I'd need someone to walk me through it.

What is the full model of the laptop please?

Can you help with this problem?
