Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 unstable, once I log in... I can't select, run or open anything

Asked by Allan Pusch

My upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 was successful, but once I log in... I can't select, run or open anything on the desktop... The mouse just flies over the icons but pressing either mouse button does nothing.... I'm running on a Dell XPS 400, I previously ran Ubuntu 10.04 with no issues or problems. Thanks Allan

Does it happen as a new user?

Little difficult if he can't select anything.
Please try logout: ctrl+alt+delete

Login as 'Guest' by using arrow-key down.
Test mouse behaviour.

## You can test everything in this session and won't mess-up anything, the session completely resets after logout.

Logout again.
Next:
If possible and the mouse works on login screen, login to unity-2d session, click on the small tool icon beside the login name to select 'unity-2d'.
Test mouse behaviour and report back, thanks.

My mouse works fine to login... I can select any user, once I login and I am looking at my desktop.... My mouse still works except that it doesn't let me select anything on the desktop. I logged in as myself with the 'Ubuntu 2d' option and now I can select everything. Thanks.
