What make and model keyboard?
What layout does the keyboard use?
How does the keyboard connect to the system?
If the system is a laptop, what make and model is it?

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Thanks

darcy, it sounds like you have a "compose" mode used for input. This is often used in languages which have accented characters.

either what mycae said or you installed a foreign keyboard.
you can click system>preferences>keyboard
the layout to see which keyboard you have installed. you can change the keyboard from there as well.

Hi Guys,

I went to the help page for keyboards and followed the instructions. I have the English (US, alternative international) keyboard option. There are no other options to choose in this window.

When I go to Keyboard Layout Options and expand the Compose Key Position and Key to choose 3rd Level nothing is selected. Should I select one or more of these choices?

Sorry, I need more hand holding...... :( What should I do next?

Thanks in advance.

Darcy
