can't change systemwide keyboard layout

Asked by Koen

hello.
i recently switched to the dvorak keyboard-layout

but, the virtual terminals AND the login screen are still using qwerty.
as a result, if i need to drop back on the console, i need to use qwerty,

i did asraedy a lot of googling, but the advice seems outdated. i have already tried:
- using the keyboard-settings GUI
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-tools
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

i am currently running ubuntu 11.04 BETA

EDIT1
sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-data
does the trick, but it won't survive a reboot.

Hi Keon,

Did this occur on a new install, or were you originally using QWERTY, and changed the keyboard layout to DVORAK in the preferences?

I did an install, selected DVORAK as the keyboard during the install, and do not have this issue.

Thanks

If you created virtual systems that used qwerty then you will have to change the layout in each virtual system, I believe. I don't think it carries the keyboard preference from your machine to the virtual machine, you have to use what is set up on the virtual machine.
I have a similar problem when I remote desktop/terminal server into my Windows box from my ubuntu box. Even though the Windows box is set up with the dvorak keyboard it defaults to qwerty when I remote in. This could also be what is happening in your virtual machines.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Paul

sry, there is a misunderstanding here. the ubuntu installation is not a virtual one. the server part of my machine is just a minecraft server i am hosting for some friends.

the problem is that only GNOME and GDM(after entering username) do Dvorak. the terminal(ctrl+F1) still does Qwerty.
i hope i am clear enough. don't hesitate asking for more info if needed.

Hi Koen,

The only thing I can think of is because you made the original install using QWERTY and then changed to DVORAK in the preferences the default in the system is QWERTY.

One thing you can try is under Keyboard Preferences go to the layouts tab, and remove QWERTY (or whatever it's called) from the layout list, so only USA Dvorak is remaining.

Also, remove the tick from 'Separate layout for each Window'

This should remove the QWERTY from the default, so when you open the terminal, the default should be Dvorak.

Try the first step and see if that works, and the try the second step.

If that fails I don't know what else you can do except reinstall and select Dvorak as the only keyboard layout at the initial install.

Hope this helps.
Paul

well.. i did that, and it resulted in a kernel panic. i am sure none of us had expected that. maybe it is totally unrelated anyway.

At the moment, i am making a full backup of my system, and i am going to reinstall. (this time with a separate /home)

thanks for your support anyway!
