Random repeating keytrokes of period key

Asked by James Moore

On any sort of area that is selected that allows for keyboard input my computer will frequently act as if the . (period) key is held down. It stops this action when another key is pressed and then I have to go back and delete the 30 to 40 periods entered in. Also the . (period) key itself does not working when actually pressed.

What can I do to fix this?

I have Ubuntu installed on my netbook with all the latest updates.
I've reset keyboard settings to default.
Restarting the computer does not fix this issue.
I've run a System Testing and sent the report to my Launchpad email but do not know how to find it as I am posting this on my windows desktop.

Thanks!

Edit: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid), GNOME 2.30.2 (Ubuntu 2010-06-25) and Kernel 2.6.32-28-generic

if it feels funny when you press the . then something might be lodged underneath it. otherwise it's a bad keyboard.

It feels completely fine when pressing it. I've even used compressed air to clean under it. As it's a netbook there's not really a way to replace the keyboard now is there? Is this essentially a death sentence to my comp?

well, if it's still under warranty, you can return it.
netbooks are really toys, especially the ones from gateway.

Can you help with this problem?
