3d screensaver freezes, wine freezes, any 3d effects freeze

Asked by Todd

Feisty has been working wonderfully for me, albeit a few pesky problems. . . most of which I'm guessing are stemming from my integrated video chipset: Via S3 Unichrome 3D.

Any time I use one of the screensavers, the system reboots.
Video (.mpg, dvd, etc.) cannot be played. The player loads, but provides error messages. This occurs with both with Totem movie player and M movie player.
Wine (windows emulator), when activated, causes a reboot of the computer as is the case with the screensaver issue.

Any ideas? I've already tried to update my video drivers with sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

Thanks in advance!
 Todd

The fglrx drivers should not help you at all, they are for ATI cards.
Could you give this command in a terminal and tell us the output:

lspci -v

And if you can paste here your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files this will be wonderful.

You can also check if this package contains the right drivers for you:

xserver-xorg-video-unichrome

This driver provides support for various VIA UniChrome cards, among them: VT3122, VT7205, VT3108, VT3118, VT3344, VT3157, VT3230 and VT3343.

You should see the chipset of your card from the lspci -v listing.
If this supports your chipset, you should:

1) remove your fglrx drivers: sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx
2) install the S3 drivers: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-unichrome
3) regenerate the xorg.conf file: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Thanks so much for the prompt response.

From the info in your log file your video graphics device id is the 3108, so the unichrome drivers should work for you.
But first you should remove the via drivers as they may conflicts:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-via

If this also fails, you only resource is to use the VESA drivers, which unfortunately will not provide accellerated 3D.

You may find some more info on the open-source drivers for your card here:

I got a similar problem with my Via Unichrome Pro and K8M800 South Bridge, which is the same as the one described above. 3D screensaver freeze, google-earth freezes and desktop effects (compiz) refuse to work. Beryl makes my system hang. 2D stuff like video/DVD is working at it's best. By the way, it is not my graphics adapter which doesn't work but the driver; in windows everything is working fine. However, I already tried the unichrome drivers, they don't work at all. Viaarena.com provides a 2D driver which is supposed to work together with Mesa. But compiling and installing this driver already cost me weeks of fiddling around with my system and twice reinstalling the whole thing. So I'd propose why can't we have a driver for Ubuntu 7.04 like it is provided for the nvidia graphics adapters. Please don't tell me that I'm supposed to use the openchrome driver, they don't work.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Todd for more information if necessary.
