blank screen on boot up after 9.10 update

Asked by Granton Smith

Hi all, appologies if the answer to this question is lurking somewhere in another post... but I'm a complete Ubuntu (and Linux) noob, and I can't seem to figure this out.

I downloaded recently the ubuntu 9.10 distribution and installed it on my Acer aspire 3000 notebook. The installation went fine... it was easy even. Impressed! The update manager came up and downloaded about 100mb of goodies. Everything was working well, using default drivers across the board.

Anyway, after a few days playing around the system update manager popped up and asked if I wanted to download more updates (this was on 5/1/10). After installing this update I found that the GUI ("X"?) wouldn't boot up anymore. I get a circle logo for a short time after GRUB loads and then......blank.

After much fiddling around (and a bit of learning) and LOTS of reading over the last couple of days (including one complete re-install from the CD) I found that if I hit ctrl-alt-F7 once the system boots to the blank screen, it brings me to the X desktop.

So I can work around the problem by hitting ctrl-alt-F7 whenever I start the computer... but it was nicer before... Ideas? Pls bear in mind that I know absolutely zero about linux...

Thanks guys.

Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version of xorg-server. This will tell us if the update was succesful.

Bring up a terminal and type gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Then tell us the output of that file:

Dear SiS76x user, your machine is using a shared memory framebuffer.
Due to hardware limitations of the SiS chip in combination with the
AMD CPU, video overlay support is very limited on this machine. If you
experience flashing lines in the video and/or the graphics display
during video playback, reduce the color depth and/or the resolution
and/or the refresh rate. Alternatively, use the video blitter.

Hi

This is an email of a guy who also has an acer aspire 3000 notebook. You might want to contact him to find out if he has upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 and what problems he has encountered and fixed. Also below is the website where i found it. Notice it is old and still on gutsy.

When looking at your output file i came across this. I take it that this laptop has integrated graphics and not dedicated. Try resolving the problem by getting into gui display (ctrl-alt-F7) and reducing refresh rate or colour depth.

All the best :)

...acutally It kinda solved it...

I have incresed the video buffer in the BIOS and now don't get the flickering screen "artifacts" that I was getting before... they were really a side issue though.

I followed the instructions I found here:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only
to install the PPA with a new SIS driver...

lo-and behold... BING! X-ubuntu loads straight away at boot up... no more black screen of nothingness, and no more need to hit ctrl-alt-F7 to get into the x gui...

I'm learning slowly!!
