Video card installation

Asked by Tom NZ

Greetings,
I have recently installed Ubuntu on my desktop with MS-6183 motherboard. It works reasonably well but the graphics have a protracted flickering session during bootup.
To side step that problem I am trying to install a S3 TRIO64v+ card and am faced with:
"Failed to start the x server...........it is likely that it is not configured correctly...."
I viewed the X server output:
"X server output
X Window System Version 7.1.1
Markers etc etc etc ...
(==) Log File: "/var/log/xorg.0.log"
(==) Using config file: "/etc/x11/xorg.conf"

I have disabled the onboard video chip.
I guess that I need to use the S3 driver, but can't figure how to do that when I can't start Ubuntu.
Thanks
Tom

Hi,

no worries about the double post.

Could you please attach a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/xorg.0.log as well as the output for the command "lspci -vv", and we'll see where we can go from there.

Thanks,
-Gabriel

I'm having some trouble with the other 2 requests - when I put in sudo /etc/X11/xorg.config I get the password prompt but I can't key it in!
Sorry to be so dense.

sudo requires you to put in the account password you are currently logged in, not a root password.

Your account must be configured in the sudoer list. The account you create doing the installation of ubuntu is automatically entered into this list.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to be so useless, Folks,
When i enter 'sudo passwd root' on my terminal, I get the password prompt, but then my keyboard will not key anything!
The only key that will work at that stage is the 'enter' key.
Obviously this is a basic hurdle which I need to overcome.
Thanks in anticipation
Tom

Tom,

As you know that when you type "sudo root passwd" you are trying to change the root password. However before it will let you do this it is prompting you for the user name password that you are currently logged in as (e.g. tom). After that it will ask you for the new "root" password. The reason why it doesn't show what you're typing is so someone looking over your shoulder couldn't figure out how many characters your password is. Hope that helps

Thanks Mike!
I must apologise for bumbling around with my terminal in such a heavy handed manner - I have still some to learn about that issue!

Sorry too for putting those log files on in full, when I could have put them as attachments.

After viewing those files I can see where some of my graphics problems may lay, but I'm not really up to modifying those X11/config files without some guidance!
Cheers

Thanks for that info - as you can see my experience with sudo (and with Ubuntu) is not very great - but I'm learning.
I managed to get those log files that GabrielGrant asked for, but not via sudo. I still need some coaching on that.
I really appreciate your help.
