Video problem w/Diamond Stealth 64 S3

Asked by Gary

I have been able to install Ubuntu 7.04 without incident. If I launch from the Live CD in safe VGA mode everything works well. When I try and launch from my HDD, then the screen blacks out. I am using a R7S5A motherboard with an AMD 1000 MHz chip and the Diamond Stealth 64 Video card. I see other people have had the same problem, but I either don't see or don't understand the fix. I am very new to Linux (first attempt at using). Can you offer any help, please? Thank you.

Boot in Recovery Mode (second options in the boot menu).
At the prompt give this command:

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Answer the questions and afterward start the x session with "startx" or "/etc/init.d/gdm star" (without double commas).
If everything goes fine, next time you reboot you will be at the desktop.

PS. It is likely better to use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" but you need to answer many more questions, try it if you feel brave.
