trouble installing 1.5.2 drivers

Asked by Lori

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04and when I installed the ATi binary and catalyst when I rebooted I just got a blank screen with red dots at the top. I found someone else with this issue and he recommenced to install intrepid 1.5.2 drivers.
I downloaded them, extracted them but not sure what to do next
Can any one walk me through this.

Which ATI card do you have?
I had similar problems installing Karmic on my laptop with its ATI Radeon Xpress 200M card. I mention it on my blog:
You may still be in luck if you have a newer ATI card. Check this site to see if your card is listed:
If your card is here, head over to for instructions on how to proceed.
If not, then you can always install an older version of Ubuntu which should work fine. Both versions 8.04 and 8.10 should work fine with older ATI cards.

I'm currently testing Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop and the default installation is working fine so far with my ATI card. Keep in mind that this is only the first Alpha release, so I wouldn't recommend it for regular daily use just yet. The final release date for Lucid Lynx will be April 29th 2010.
