First of all: do you need to install any driver? Is there something wrong with the current status of your Ubuntu? If not, why bothering installing drivers you don't need?

Otherwise, you might want to try the installation guide there:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide

It is not exactly next -> next -> ok. Computers are a bit more complicated than next -> next -> ok, unfortunately.

YES I need to install drivers

Because nothing 3d works, and when watching a movie or clip it gets all pixly and it can not keep up

The problem is that when you click "applications" "add/remove" and add the ATi binary X.org driver and restart the computer your screen goes all crazy and becomes black and you have to reinstall Ubuntu

The same happened when I downloaded the 9.4 auto installer file from the ATI homepage

BUT

In those instructions it said that I must run the /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial file or something and THIS is what I am unable to do and of course when you restart after not doing that you get the black screen again and have to reinstall the whole UBuntu

So how do I run the aticonfig file how EXACTLLY in the most exact sense do I run it

Also an Auto installer where you just click next next would be so go

Like the applications add/remove button but their of course it all crashes and goes black.

IF you do the Applications add remove and type in radeon in search and select search ALL applications you get an ATI tool but when I try to run it it also says run the aticonfig file so how do I run it

And if there is an easy auto install program please tell me ;)

Hi,

It is not clear whether you have followed the first "default" procedure of the link I provided:

"For most users it won't be necessary to go into installation and configuration details of the driver. Ubuntu provides a notification saying that there are restricted drivers available. You just have to go there (Restricted Drivers Manager) and enable the "ATI accelerated graphics driver". Ubuntu will then install and configure the driver for you."

Here is a series of steps that seemed to work for some people: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1024846&highlight=X2300 . If everything else fails, you may want to try this. There is even no next -> next -> OK buttons to click. Just open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy/paste this (ans type your password when asked).

By the way, you don't need to reinstall everything when your X sever crashes! The safe mode (and the xfix function in it) is just designed for this.

In hte first link you gave I did step 1 which gave me my nice black screen of death

Like all installations I could not run the aticonfig file, it says no adapters supported or something like that

this second link is basically the same thing except that it does link to a guy who has the same computer as me but he installed his things in text mode which is interesting since I have no idea how to do that

Linux is hard

Everything I do gives me the black screen of death

How do I run in safe mode

Reinstalling every time is a Bitch

How do I run in safe mode

when Ubuntu starts you get i timer counting down, press ESC and you will see "recovery mode", that is safe mode :) After some jobs that Ubuntu does you will get a menu, the last thing is xfix which fixes your X - graphics settings (user interface)

I also have problems with enabling 3D on my laptop, which uses Radeon Xpress 200M, in google i found info that says old video cards are not supported in 9.04, but maybe this will be fixed with the new kernel

We hope so!

Can you help with this problem?
