Bad video drivers

Asked by Tirrex_Falcon

I have a Gateway NV5391 running Ubu 9.04 that has an ATI chipset. I installed the proprietary drivers to see if I could improve my graphics and now all I get is a black screen. I can boot into Ubu 9.04, Kernel 2.6.28-19 recovery mode and I have tried xfix to auto fix video issues but to no avail. Can I drop to the root shell and uninstall the driver? or is there another way?

Thanks,

Yes, there should be "drop to root shell prompt" selection in recovery menu. Proprietary ATI driver is very glitchy. Try 'apt-get autoremove xorg-driver-fglrx' (obviously without quotes) in root shell.
