ATI Radeon X1200 : Desktop effects could not be enabled on Maverick but could be on Lucid

Asked by Gonzalo Bulnes Guilpain

Hello,

I'm running Maverick on a MSI PR210 laptop. It is a fresh and up-to-date install.
When I try to enable desktop effects, a dialog appears : "Searching available drivers..." after a while the display is affected as if desktop effects would be enabled, but immediately it is affected again and a new dialog appears : "Desktop effects could not be enabled".

$ lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]

On Lucid, desktop effects can be enabled through System>Preferences>Appearance and when enabled System>Administration>Hardware Drivers indicates that "No propietary drivers are in use [...]". I guess -not sure- that my graphic card is supported by the radeon driver.

My question: should I report a bug? If the answer is yes, should I report this bug against xserver-xorg-driver-ati ?

Best regards,

Maverick isn't even in beta yet. What did you expect!? Its under massive development and is not due for release for another 3 MONTHS.

If you expect a system to work then use Lucid but if you are happy to contribute bugs and have an unstable system then maverick is good.

I very much doubt much in the way of ATi will function for quite some time but you should log a bug to show you identified an issue.

Hello actionparsnip,

I am very confused about your answer, which I think is not very informative to my question. Actually, the only last 11 words of your message are relevant, nevertheless useful.

Before reporting a bug against the wrong package I'll wait to see if somebody can give me some advice...

You will need to simply wait until the development gets to somewhere stable for the ATi card. The current ATi driver does not support xorg 7.5 so ATi will need to write a driver supporting this version.

Basically due to the low amount of development in Maverick yuo will not get the usual stuff you are used to, its not ready for release and should only be used by developers developing for maverick or those willing to contribute bugs as and when they find them.

@actionparsnip:

I installed Maverick Alpha 1 aiming to report bugs, and a matter of fact I already read the Reporting Bugs HowTo from the CUD, I am just trying to avoid contributing bugs which will not be useful because they were reported against the wrong package or without the relevant information.

I do need help in finding the right package, that's why I ask someone...

The package would be jockey

ubuntu-bug jockey-gtk

Will start the bug logging procedure.
