XSane UI range controls up down arrows stop working

As soon as I add SANE_INFO_RELOAD_OPTIONS to one of my scan parameter options (br_x, br_y, page-width, page-height) in my sane back-end code, the up and down arrow buttons on the XSane UI stop working. I have to select the field and type in a new value, which works just fine. Just wondering why the up-down arrows stopped functioning. If I remove SANE_INFO_RELOAD_OPTIONS, then the up-down buttons work again.
