I can't highlight text on Xpad notes after upgrading to Xubuntu 16.10 from 16.04

Asked by chemikyn

Hello all.

First time posting here and not much of an (X)ubuntu expert, so usual caveats even though I'm trying my best.

I was running Xubuntu 16.04 and had been using Xpad 4.8.0 for several months and it'd been working flawlessly. Then a few weeks ago I upgraded to Xubuntu 16.10 and ever since I can't highlight text on my Xpad notes. More precisely: I can highlight text using both the touchpad and the keyboard (I don't use a mouse) but the highlighting itself doesn't show. Meaning: I 'highlight' a word using the SHIFT and arrow keys or the touchpad and no highlighting can be seen and the text just looks normal. But then if I type anything the text behaves as if it were highlighted and disappears and gets substituted by whatever I type. Or if I 'highlight' something and then type CTRL + C and then click somewhere else and type CTRL + V the text I had 'highlighted' gets copied correctly. So the highlighting does work even though the highlighting itself doesn't show.

I was about to report this as a bug but decided to ask here first as I don't really know whether this is indeed a bug.

Has anyone had this problem using Xpad after upgrading to 16.10? Or at any other time before 16.10?

And does anyone have any idea of what we could do to try and fix it?

Many thanks in advance for your time and attention, and any help will be much appreciated!

P.S:

I have the same problem on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04. Thanks a lot for your post, I hadn't immediately tried whether copy/paste works even if the highlighting is invisible. Extra observation: When (invisibly) highlighting text, the blinking cursor disappears, as it does when highlighting text in any other application.

Addendum: With Preferences -> Layout -> Use colors from theme, highlighting works as usual. So it has to do with the custom foreground/background colors. The way to go would be to check whether this still happens with the development branch at https://code.launchpad.net/xpad, and if so, file a bug. I may try that, but not too soon.

Thank you, Jan, for replying.

Actually, this got fixed on its own when I upgraded to Xubuntu 18.04, and highlighting (and everything else) on Xpad has been working well ever since :-)
