check /etc/X11/ directory

xorg.conf will be in this directory.

If you are using Karmic - it doesn't exist anymore - but you can create one.

If you make one it will be used. I have complained about this and believe a skeletal file should remain. My monitor does not report refresh rates so I NEED the file but Canonical seem to think HAL will fix all and it simply doesn't.
