new monitor display size

Asked by Peter R

1.) After replacing monitor V7 22" (1680x1050) with ASUS VH242H 24" (1920x1080) expected screen size 52cm x 29cm.

2.)Display gives a window of 48cm x 27cm with black border. (Resolution OK at 1920x1080)

Have followed many troubleshooting paths, all associated logs appended, ending up at 'Troubleshooting Resolution Problems, Problem Wrong resolutions, refresh rates, or monitor specs.'

Seems to point to monitor spec problem, ASUS VH242H being detected in certain reports but not available at Display Preferences on the Desktop.
Karmic updated,ATI driver reinstalled, xserver restarted etc.
My Ubuntu/Linux capabilities insufficient to enable me to resize display window size.

I'd try a reboot, if still isn't recognized afterwards, boot into recovery mode and try option xfix.
Maybe xrandr helps.

Thanks Sam,

Eventually twigged xfixes not available in karmic recovery mode.............
Seems a particular edit of xorg.conf could work but I'm not confident enough to be sure of recovering from command line if it went wrong.
Have appended all info suggested by various forums and hope it may be of help.

Regards

Peter

Ok, lets say you'd like to edit xorg.conf then backup before editing:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

In case of restore: go to recovery mode, choose root console:
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

My computer crashes after resizing the resolution: by the fault there is a fraction on the left hand side in black color when I installed Ubuntu 10.10, I tried to resize it by changing the resolution of my monitor and then it crashes causing a restart. My monitor is a benq
