ubuntu 9.10 satellite pro 4600 video problem

Asked by tcsp

Was working fine until final Ubuntu 9.10 installed (clean)
Had 1024x resolution now only has 800x600 screen with black border.
Video is Trident CyberBlade XP
Have tried many options from the net including 'cut&paste' into xorg.conf using sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

None made any difference, implying the new data is being ignored. (I would expect at least the odd crash!)

Clearly I'm doing something wrong.
 Any ideas?

Have you done;
gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

enter this:

      Section "Device"
              Identifier "Configured Video Device"
      EndSection

      Section "Monitor"
      Identifier "Configured Monitor"
      Option "DPMS" "true"
      HorizSync 30.0-60.0
      VertRefresh 50.0-70.0
      EndSection

      Section "Screen"
              Identifier "Default Screen"
              Monitor "Configured Monitor"
              Device "Configured Video Device"
      DefaultDepth 24

      SubSection "Display"
      Depth 24
      Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
      EndSubSection
      EndSection

saved and rebooted? :)

Thanks for your quick reply Isak.
Did as you said and found no difference.

There were a number of xorg.conf suggestions and none of them worked, so I'm wondering if something is overriding it's effect?

Is it possible to run two Ubuntus? If so, perhaps I should install Edubunto 7 which worked like a charm and grab it's xorg.conf?
Thanks

Hm, things have changed in Xorg since then and it doesn't have to work to use old xorg.conf.

Could you copy paste your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

The problem is this:
(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz
(WW) TRIDENT(0): Unable to estimate virtual size

Hm, why doesn't it use the values you supply it...?
      HorizSync 30.0-60.0
      VertRefresh 50.0-70.0
or
     HorizSync 28-51
     VertRefresh 43-60

Lets try to find out the right values for you:
sudo apt-get install xresprobe
sudo ddcprobe | grep monitorrange

What is your output of that command?

Seemed to install alright, no errors flagged.
But running the second command produced no output until I left off all after |
Then it produced several screens worth, including many mode 1024 references
Among others at the end was

id: 5082
eisa: TOS5082
screensize 92 22
timing 1024x768@87 Hz Interlaced (8514A)
dtiming 1024x768@
Monitorname TOSHIBA Inte
Monitorname rnal 1024x76
Monitorname 8 Panel

If there's an output file I'll send it
Thanks for your persistence!

There is in fact a bug report about this:

Sorry this is so 'uphill' but I'll stick if you will!!
Seems the problem is indeed tied up in the frequency range.
I'll remove all content in the config file so as to start with a 'clean slate'

Update.
Ran Puppy Linux and screen was fine.
Just to try, I transferred it's video data to Ubuntu xorg.conf but made no difference. (It had H 31.5-48.5 V 40-70)
Then used original xorg.conf with H&V freq changed to the Puppy ones. Still no good. : )

Bad news.
Tried for hours and suddenly LT died. Re-start failed. Then much later re-start ok. Close observation shows under Ubuntu cpu fan not operating whereas in W/XP fan comes on approx 15-45 min after boot. LT seems undamaged this time!

Since the video is unresolved and the LT is in danger without the cpu fan I've reverted to Ubuntu 7 which had none of these problems.

As the main purpose of Ubuntu was to be able to use older hardware rather than throwing it away, I'm disappointed v 9.10 has failed for me.

I realise my ignorance is no help but I'm amazed at how many wrong answers I found!

It's weird we cannot get the Ubuntu trident driver to use the right values instead of some odd default values.

What do you mean with Ubuntu 7? 7.04 or 7.10? These are both unmaintained and shouldn't be used anymore. Use Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS if you need something a little bit older than Karmic.

What's LT ?

Ubuntu is quite heavy actually on older hardware. Of course using LXDE instead of GNOME would improve the situation.

It sucks I couldn't help you resolve your issue :/

Thanks for your efforts Isak.
Sorry, LT = lap top!

Previously the course I followed was install U7.04 (mess with the wireless a bit) and in due course I was told upgrade to 8.04 is available.
Initially I did a clean install of 8.04 and had similar video problems, however, as Linux is not such a nightmare to upgrade (normally), I re-installed 7.04 and upgraded to 8.04 (via download/update system) and all worked.

Then I tried 9.04 - disaster, hung and no screen at post install boot! So I tried 9.10 which installed great except only 800x600 mode.
The rest you know. I guess I copy and pasted at least 10-15 xorg.conf variations as well as different promising frequency ranges.
T
he block seems to be that something overrides xorg.conf as there never was any effect on the screen or on the options available under the legitimate screen settings option in the desktop. (Although the log file showed it being processed)

At the risk of boring you, here is the last log, showing, at least, most frequency arguments are gone;

And, then, the cooling problem - the poor LT never cycled so often in it's life so that probably didn't help!
Full marks to Toshiba, this is a tough lap top!
And thanks again for your input

 Using a default monitor configuration.
[...]

Already there it's simply using a "default monitor configuration" because of that "No monitor specified for screen [...]".
However as they say here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1098092&highlight=toshiba+4600
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-763964.html
Many confirm and have got 9.10, 9.04 and 8.10 to work by using a very very simple xorg.conf so I'm not really sure WHAT it needs before reading our custom Hsync and Vrefresh.

Later on it says this:
(--) TRIDENT(0): TFT Panel 1024x768 found
So the trident driver understands your 1024x768 monitor;
however because of that is is using <default monitor> it then says:
(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz
(WW) TRIDENT(0): Unable to estimate virtual size

So maybe adding a
Builtin Default trident Monitor 0
would do the trick? :D Soon I'm really out of clues.

Have you tried
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -pHigh xserver-xorg
or
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ?

Quite different, but I've lost internet access, hence the slow reply.
Will have to get it on line before I can continue.......

Back on line & more news.
First, the Ubuntu on the initial disk was Edubuntu 6.06, sorry : )
So, installed 6.06 and all worked (1024 etc). Internet failed so copied xorg.conf to floppy (yes, it has one! As well as all those ports which are skimped these days!).

Next clean installed Ubuntu 8.10. All worked except only 600x.
Put xorg.conf of 6.06 as listed above on (copy/replace) and all ok ie 1024x and all lower resolutions.

So have 8.10 and all fine.
As internet now working took suggested upgrade route to 9.04 which took hours and gave a lot of error messages that it seemed to bypass including ..."generic event extension" missing on Display ":0.0"

Now restarting.... and all OK!
Says it's 9.04 when asked and still at 1024etc and all lower resolutions.
The xorg.conf file has changed it's size so something is new there, and it doesn't recognise the display.

Looks like I'll stick with Ubuntu 9.04 for now. Can send the new xorg.conf file if you want to compare.
It seems logical to assume the 6.06 xorg.conf will make all versions below 9.10 work in my laptop.
Anyone wanting to try can copy and paste from the above posting. Good luck!

Great work ;) We'll have to try to survive with 9.04 for now.

Thanks again for your help Isak, as you pointed me to the commands / programs etc that let me sort things to this point..
I now know something about a small part of Linux!

I'll try
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -pHigh xserver-xorg
or
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

when I've recovered, and maybe a upgrade install of 9.10 in a moment of weakness! ;)
